Urban by Nature

Urban by Nature / IABR 2014 starts from the position that we can solve the global environmental problems if we solve the problems of the city.

From the perspective of the landscape architecture, IABR-2014 first looks at what city and urbanity actually is. More and more people live in the city, but where exactly do they live? The answer is: not only in compact inner cities, but in large vast city landscapes that are predominantly in the deltas of this world, and never far from the water.
The city and landscape are increasingly merging and that is why this exhibition is investigating the relationship between city and nature. The more we know about it, the more hold we have when designing, planning and managing our complex urban landscapes.

If we consider the city as our natural ecology, its structure and metabolism analyze, understand and learn to use, then we can work concretely on a more resilient city, and therefore on a more sustainable future.

IABR 2014 presents 96 concrete and innovative projects brought together in six exhibitions: Five in the Kunsthal and one in the Natural History Museum Rotterdam.

The Earth a Garden
The (re) designing the city landscape requires a committed relationship between people and nature. There are many ways to shape that involvement. From gardens and parks to nature conservation and nature development.

Exploring the Substrate
Discover, revalue and plans of the unknown world under our feet. The surface as a location of natural resources, as storage, but also as an archive of our cultural history and of the earth itself.
The Urban Metabolism
Most global environmental problems can be traced back to the poor functioning of urban metabolism. If we want to solve those problems, we will have to tackle them in the city landscapes.

City Landscape and Climate Change
The largest city landscapes in the world are located along the coasts and in the Deltas. These areas are the most vulnerable to the effects of rising sea level. Plans for water safety go hand in hand with area development.

Strategies for the City Landscape
Urbanization is becoming a landscape architectural task, while the landscape starts to show traits of an urban development problem. Can we still make plans on the scale of this city landscape?
